Omegle Interests: How They Worked and How Matching Works Here

Omegle interests were optional tags you typed before starting a chat, like "anime" or "football". Omegle tried to pair you with a stranger who had typed one of the same words, and if it found nobody, you got a random stranger instead. Omegle closed in November 2023, and OmegleLife uses the same idea. You can add up to 10 interests, the matcher spends a few seconds looking for someone who shares one, and then it pairs you with whoever is free. When the match comes from a shared interest, the chat shows "You both like:" followed by the interests you have in common.

OmegleLife is not affiliated with Omegle.com. The interest box here is our own version of the idea.

How Omegle interests worked

Omegle added interest tags to its text and video modes in 2012, according to a 2018 version of its Wikipedia article. You could type as many as you liked, and the site tried to match you with someone who had something in common with you. The same article says that "if no available match is found, the user is paired with a completely random stranger instead."

Interests improved your odds of a good first line without guaranteeing one. On a quiet evening or with an obscure tag, you got a random stranger like anyone who left the box empty.

The site launched in 2009 and shut down on November 8, 2023, according to Wikipedia's current Omegle entry. Its founder, Leif K-Brooks, said running it was "no longer sustainable, financially nor psychologically," as NBC Chicago reported. Our post on what happened to Omegle covers the rest. The interest box is one of the features people still search for, because it fixed the hardest part of talking to a stranger, which is finding something to say.

How interest matching works on OmegleLife

  1. You type an interest in the lobby and press Enter or a comma to turn it into a tag. You can add up to 10, each up to 30 characters, and your browser remembers them for next time. Backspace in the empty box removes the last tag.
  2. When you start a chat, the log says "Looking for people who like:" followed by your tags.
  3. For the first few seconds, the matcher only pairs you with someone who shares at least one tag. A stranger with no interests can't be matched with you during that window, and neither can someone whose tags don't overlap with yours.
  4. Once the window ends, the matcher drops the requirement and pairs you with anyone who's free. It still gives a shared tag extra weight when it ranks the people waiting, so a match on an interest can still happen after the window.
  5. When you connect, the chat shows "You both like:" with the tags you share.

The stranger only sees the overlap. If you added "chess", "cooking" and "f1" and they only share "cooking", that's the one word they see. The rest of your list stays on your screen.

Leaving the box empty is fine too. With no interests you skip the waiting window and meet the next free stranger, which is the quickest way into a chat when you don't mind who it is. Interests work the same in text chat and video chat, and they're free for everyone.

Why you got a random match anyway

The usual cause is timing. The matcher waits a few seconds for a shared tag and then gives up on it, so you aren't left watching a loading screen.

You're more likely to land a random match when your interests are rare, when it's a quiet hour where you are, or when you spelled a tag differently from most people. Spelling is the easiest of the three to fix. OmegleLife turns tags into lowercase and trims extra spaces, so "Football" and "football" match. It doesn't know that "football" and "soccer" mean the same thing, or that "kpop" and "k-pop" do. Use the spelling most people would type, or add both.

Best Omegle interests to add

A good set mixes one or two broad tags, which find someone fast, with one or two specific ones, which give you more to talk about once you're matched.

Too vague Broad but useful Specific and still findable
fun movies horror
chat music hip hop
bored gaming minecraft
hi sports basketball

Words like "fun", "chat" and "bored" match people but say nothing about them, so the "You both like" line gives you nothing to work with. A tag so narrow that no one else is likely to type it, like your town's amateur football club, means you wait out the window for nothing.

If you want ideas, start with tags like these:

  • Shows and films: anime, k-drama, horror, marvel, studio ghibli
  • Games: minecraft, valorant, fortnite, chess, nintendo
  • Music: kpop, rap, rock, metal, lofi
  • Sport: football, cricket, basketball, gym, f1
  • Learning: english, spanish, programming, history, space
  • Everyday life: cooking, coffee, cats, dogs, travel, books

If you're learning a language, add it. Typing "english" is a quick way to find other learners, and our post on practicing English with strangers online has more on using random chat that way.

Keep personal details out of your interests

Shared tags appear on the stranger's screen, so treat every tag as something you'd say out loud to them. Don't add your school, your workplace, your exact town or a social media handle. "Football" is a good tag. The name of your local club next to your neighborhood tells a stranger roughly where you live.

Interests and the Premium filters

Premium adds a country filter and a gender filter, and both work alongside interests. The gender filter uses the gender people chose for themselves, which nobody verifies. Filters are strict in a way interests aren't: someone outside your chosen countries won't be matched with you at all. If nobody fitting your filters is online for a while, the app tells you and offers to widen the search to everyone, and your filters stay saved for next time.

Questions about Omegle interests

Do interests cost anything?

No. Interests are free on OmegleLife, in text and video. Only the country and gender filters need Premium.

Why can't I add more than 10 interests?

Ten is the cap on OmegleLife. If you hit it, cut the tags you wouldn't enjoy talking about, since any one of them can be the line a stranger sees.

Do interests work on video chat?

Yes. Text and video use the same matcher, so the same tags, waiting window and "You both like:" line apply in both.

What should I say after "You both like"?

Ask a question that only someone into that thing would answer. "What's the best thing you've cooked this month?" goes further than "so you like cooking?" Our list of conversation starters for random chat has more openers built on a shared interest.

Add two or three tags and see who turns up.
