Random Video Chat With Strangers
Random video chat on OmegleLife puts you on camera with one stranger at a time, and the queue decides who. It's free and runs in the browser on your phone or computer, with no account to make. Tick the 18+ box, press Start video chat and allow your camera, and the matcher goes looking for someone. Expect plenty of quick hellos and skips, and now and then a conversation that runs for an hour. OmegleLife is not affiliated with Omegle.com.
How random video chat works here
You can add up to 10 interests before you start. The matcher spends a few seconds looking for someone free who typed at least one of the same words. If nobody did, it pairs you with whoever is waiting, so a niche interest won't leave you stuck in the queue. A shared interest shows up in the chat box as "You both like: …", which gives you an easy first line.
While it searches, the screen says "Looking for someone you can chat with…". Once you're connected it says "You're now chatting with a random stranger." Their video appears with yours, alongside a chat box where messages are marked Stranger: and You:.
Stop ends the chat, and so does the Esc key. The first press turns the button into "Really?", so a stray tap won't drop a good conversation. Press again to confirm, then New to meet someone else. Waits get longer when fewer people are online, which shifts through the day as different time zones wake up.
Coming from Omegle video chat
According to Omegle's Wikipedia entry, the site launched in March 2009, added video in March 2010 and shut down on November 8, 2023. In his farewell note, founder Leif K-Brooks wrote that running it was "no longer sustainable, financially nor psychologically," as NBC Chicago reported. We wrote up the longer story in what happened to Omegle.
If you used Omegle video chat, the basics will feel familiar within a minute: one stranger, two webcams, a text box, interests, and Stop, Really?, New, with Esc for quick skips. The differences are mostly about safety. You have to be 18 or older (Omegle itself went adults only in 2022), free users pass a face check, and every call has a Report button that sends evidence to a moderator.
Get your camera and mic working
The first time, your browser asks to use your camera and microphone. Allow both. Video chat works in recent versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and Samsung Internet.
If the camera doesn't start, the app shows a message that says why:
- "Camera access is blocked" means you tapped Block earlier. On a computer, click the camera or lock icon in the address bar, set Camera and Microphone to Allow, and reload. In Safari on an iPhone, tap "aA" in the address bar, then Website Settings.
- "Your camera is busy" means another app or tab has it, often a meeting app or a second video site. Close it and try again.
- "No camera found" means the browser can't see a webcam. Lots of laptops have a privacy slider or a function key that switches the camera off.
If the stranger can't hear you, check you haven't muted yourself and that the browser picked the right microphone. If they hear their own voice coming back, put on headphones, because your speakers are feeding into your mic. Blocky or frozen video points to a weak connection. The app lowers the quality on its own to keep the call going. Moving closer to your router or pausing a big download helps too.
Sit facing a window or a lamp, because with the light behind you the face check may not find you. Prop your phone at eye level so the stranger isn't looking up your nose. Our post on how to look good on webcam has more setup tips.
What the face check does
On the free plan, your camera has to show a face before you join the queue, and the check keeps running through the call. It happens inside your browser and nothing is uploaded for it. It looks for a face in the frame and can't tell who you are or how old you are.
If it stops seeing you for a while, a warning pops up with a countdown. If you're still out of frame when it hits zero, the chat ends. The usual cause is dim lighting or a phone that slid over and is now filming the ceiling. The check is there so the queue isn't full of black screens and empty chairs. Premium members can turn it off.
Controls during a call
You can mute your mic, go fullscreen and, on a phone, switch between the front and back camera. You can turn your camera off too, though on the free plan the face check ends the chat if it stays off. The chat box is handy when the audio is bad or an accent is hard to follow.
Getting past the first few seconds
You'll get skipped a lot on random video chat, sometimes before you've said a word. Some strangers want someone who speaks their language, and others keep pressing New until a face or a background makes them curious.
Be lit and in frame before the call connects. Say something out loud straight away, something like "hey, where are you calling from?", because a silent stare gets skipped. Interests help as well: a broad one like "music" finds matches, and a specific one, like a band or a city, gives you a real first question. Our list of conversation starters for random chat has openers that work on camera.
What a stranger can learn from a video call
Your IP address
When you video chat with strangers here, the call is peer to peer over WebRTC: sound and picture travel straight between your device and theirs, which keeps the lag low. It also means that, unless the site routes calls through a relay server, the stranger's device can technically see your IP address. MDN's WebRTC documentation notes that this address can reveal a device's location and network. In practice that means your rough area and your internet provider. Text chat runs through our server, so the other person doesn't see your IP there.
Screen recordings
Anyone can record a call with software on their own device, and no website can stop that. Assume anything you show could be saved. In a 2023 public service announcement, the FBI said it was seeing more sextortion cases that used fake explicit images made from content "captured during video chats."
If someone threatens to share a recording unless you pay, stop replying, take screenshots and report them. Paying doesn't guarantee they'll delete anything. Adults whose intimate images are being shared can use StopNCII.org, which fingerprints the image on your own device so participating platforms can block it, without uploading the image itself. Our safety page covers the rest, including what to do if the person in the images is under 18.
Your background
Letters with your address on them, a school or work logo, the view from your window and family photos on the wall can all give you away. Check the frame before you start, or sit with a plain wall behind you.
Reporting someone on video
The Report button stays on screen for the whole call, and if the stranger leaves first, you can still report them for a short while after the chat ends. Pick a reason: nudity or sexual content, someone under 18, harassment or hate, spam or a scam, violence or something illegal, or other. Reports are anonymous: the chat ends for both of you, and the other person only sees that you left.
A report saves one frame of the stranger's video as it looked on your screen, plus the last 50 chat messages, so a moderator sees what you saw. We don't save chats that nobody reports, and we keep report data for 90 days by default, then delete it. You won't be matched with that person again for at least 24 hours, and when several different people report the same person, the system bans them temporarily on its own. Bans can cover an IP address, a device and an account. The community guidelines spell out what gets someone banned.
If you think you saw a child being exploited, report it here with the "Minor (under 18)" reason and also to the NCMEC CyberTipline, which takes reports of child sexual exploitation. If a child is in immediate danger, call the police.
Free and Premium on video
Everything above is part of the free random video chat. Premium is a weekly or monthly plan you can cancel in one click, and on video it adds:
- a country filter, so you only meet people connecting from the countries you pick
- a gender filter based on the gender people chose for themselves, which nobody verifies
- the option to skip the face check
- auto-next, which starts the next search for you when a stranger leaves
- a Reconnect button for 60 seconds after a chat, which works only if the other person accepts
- priority in the queue
- photo and video sharing in the chat, blurred until tapped and deleted after 24 hours
- no ads
If you'd rather keep the camera off today, text chat uses the same matching and the same Stop button.
Frequently asked questions
Is random video chat on OmegleLife free?
Yes. Video chat is free, with no account to create and no app to install. Premium is an optional weekly or monthly plan that adds extras like a country filter and skipping the face check.
Is this the old Omegle video chat?
No. Omegle shut down in November 2023, and OmegleLife is a separate site that offers the same kind of random video chat, with the same Stop, Really? and New buttons. OmegleLife is not affiliated with Omegle.com.
Can a stranger see my IP address on video chat?
Technically, yes. Video runs peer to peer over WebRTC, so unless the site routes the call through a relay server, the other person's device can see your IP address, which can point to your rough location and internet provider. Text chat goes through our server and doesn't expose it.
Can someone record my video chat?
Yes. Anyone can screen-record a call with software on their own device, and no website can block that. Keep anything you wouldn't want saved off camera, and report anyone who threatens to share a recording.
Can I choose the country or gender of the people I meet?
With Premium, yes. The country filter only matches you with people connecting from the countries you pick, and the gender filter uses the gender people chose for themselves, which nobody verifies. On the free plan you can meet anyone.
Why do I have to show my face?
Free users pass a face check so calls start with a person on camera instead of a black screen or a ceiling. It runs in your browser and uploads nothing, and it only checks that a face is in the frame. Premium members can skip it.
Does random video chat work on my phone?
Yes. It works in mobile browsers, including Safari on iPhone, Chrome and Samsung Internet. Allow the camera and microphone when asked, and use the switch camera button to flip between the front and back camera.
Is it rude to skip someone?
No. Skipping is part of random video chat, and both sides do it all the time. If a chat was friendly but not for you, a quick bye before you press Stop is a nice touch.
