How to Report Someone on Video Chat and What Happens Next

To report someone on video chat on OmegleLife, press the flag icon, pick one of six reasons, add a note if you want, and press Report & end chat. It takes a few seconds. The chat ends for both of you, and the other person isn't told who reported them or why. The matcher also won't pair the two of you again for at least 24 hours. You don't have to keep watching or explain yourself first.
A site report can end a chat and get someone banned. It can't take down an image posted somewhere else or open a police case. A child at risk, blackmail and lost money need the police or a national hotline as well, and which one depends on where you live.
How to report someone on video chat, step by step
The Report button is a flag icon. On a computer it sits next to the video, and on a phone it's in the row of buttons over the video. In text chat you'll find it above the messages.
- Press Report.
- Pick the reason that fits best.
- Add a note of up to 300 characters if the reason doesn't tell the whole story, for example "showed a knife and said he knows my city".
- Press Report & end chat.
You'll see "Thanks for reporting." and a line saying moderators will take a look. Press New when you're ready, or close the tab for a while.
On video chat, the Report window grabs one still frame of the stranger's video the moment it opens. It shows up as a small blurred thumbnail with the note "A snapshot of the stranger's video is attached so moderators can review it." So open Report while the problem is still on screen. Once the window is open the frame is already taken, and you can look away while you pick a reason.
If the stranger left first, you can still report them for about a minute after the chat ends. On a phone, a Report link appears on the end-of-chat screen. Their video is gone by then, so a late report carries the messages and your note without a frame.
Which reason to choose
Pick the reason closest to what happened. If two fit, choose the more serious one.
| What happened | Reason to pick |
|---|---|
| Someone exposed themselves, did something sexual on camera or showed porn | Nudity / sexual content |
| The person looks or says they're under 18 | Minor (under 18) |
| Slurs, insults about your race, religion, gender or sexuality, abuse that keeps going | Harassment / hate |
| Links, "add me on another app", requests for money or crypto, obvious bots | Spam / scam |
| Threats, weapons, talk of hurting someone (themselves included), drugs, anything that looks like a crime | Violence / illegal |
| Anything else against the rules | Other, with a note |
Minor and Violence reports go to the top of the moderators' queue. OmegleLife is for adults only, so report anyone who looks underage even if they did nothing else wrong. You don't need to be sure, because a moderator will check.
What happens after you report
The other person sees the same end-of-chat message they'd get if you had pressed Stop. Nothing on their screen says it was a report.
OmegleLife doesn't keep chats that nobody reports. While a chat is open, the server holds its last 50 messages in memory for an hour at most, and throws them away when the chat ends without a report. Filing a report saves:
- those last 50 messages
- on video, the one frame from your screen
- your reason and your note
- identifiers for both of you (session ID, IP address, device hash, country, browser details and account ID if there is one), so a ban lands on the right person
Only moderators can open this evidence, and the system logs every view. OmegleLife deletes the messages, the frame and the identifiers after 90 days by default. Moderators can hold them longer when there's a legal reason, such as a case passed to the police or a child-protection body. The site keeps a short record of the report itself, with the reason, date and outcome, for as long as it needs it to spot repeat abusers.
Moderators work through reports by urgency. They can dismiss a report or ban the person for anything from an hour to permanently, on an IP address, a device, an account or an email address. The system can also act without them: when several different people report the same person within a short time, it bans that person for a while on its own. Someone who is banned sees a screen with the reason category, when the ban ends and an email address for appeals.
Most people use OmegleLife without an account, so the site can't send you an update on your report. Reports are also rate-limited: if one person files a lot of them within an hour, the extra ones carry less weight, and past a point they're refused. Filing false reports to get someone banned breaks the rules too. The community guidelines list what's not allowed, and the safety page covers moderation in more detail.
Skip or report?
Plenty of bad chats only need the Stop button. Someone rude who leaves, someone who skips you the second they see you, a silly prank or a person who doesn't feel like talking: press Stop, confirm with Really?, and move on.
Report when someone:
- shows nudity or does something sexual on camera
- goes after you with slurs or threats, or keeps harassing you after you've asked them to stop
- sends links, asks for money or crypto, or keeps pushing you to another app
- seems to be under 18
- shows a weapon or violence, or talks about hurting someone, themselves included
If you're unsure, report. The automatic ban needs reports from several different people, so one report that turns out to be nothing won't get anyone banned by itself, and a moderator can dismiss it.
Don't save explicit images yourself
Wanting proof is natural. With sexual content, let the report be the proof. Saving, recording or sharing explicit images of other people can get you into trouble, and when the person is under 18 it can be a serious crime even if you meant well. The frame attached to a video report goes to moderators and nowhere else. For threats and scams with no nudity involved, keep screenshots of the messages and the username for a police report.
Reporting someone you met on Omegle
Omegle shut down on November 8, 2023, and its report tools went with it. The domain has since changed hands, and sites with "omegle" in their name today have no link to the original or its moderators. Our post on what happened to Omegle has the details.
If someone you met on Omegle is still contacting you, threatening you or sharing images of you, report them on whatever app they're using now, and to the services listed for your country. The evidence that matters is what they're sending you today: usernames, messages and any payment requests.
Where to report outside OmegleLife
If anyone is in immediate danger, call your local emergency number before anything else.
A child at risk
Report the chat with the Minor reason, and don't save or forward the material. Then report it outside the site too:
- In the US, use the NCMEC CyberTipline, which calls itself "the place to report child sexual exploitation". It also takes calls on 1-800-843-5678.
- In the UK, CEOP, part of the National Crime Agency, takes reports from young people worried about online sexual abuse, including abuse happening to someone they know.
- In India, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal has a Women/Children Related Crime section, with an option to report anonymously.
If someone has nude or sexual images of you that were taken before you turned 18, NCMEC's Take It Down service can fingerprint them on your device and share only the fingerprint, so participating platforms can look for copies and act on them. The images aren't uploaded.
Blackmail with a recording or images
This is sextortion: someone records you or gets intimate images, then demands money or more images to keep them private. Stop replying and don't pay. In a 2023 public service announcement, the FBI said these schemes use content "captured during video chats" and warned that "complying with malicious actors does not guarantee your sensitive photos or content will not be shared." It asks victims to keep usernames, email addresses, the platform names and the messages before reporting.
- In the US, file a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov, or call 1-800-CALL-FBI. If the person targeted is under 18, report to the CyberTipline as well.
- In the UK, go to the police. The Revenge Porn Helpline lists webcam blackmail among the problems it helps adults with.
- In India, report it on cybercrime.gov.in.
Adults whose intimate images are being shared, or might be, can use StopNCII.org. It creates a digital fingerprint of the image on your own device, and only that fingerprint leaves it. Participating platforms then look for matches. StopNCII says it "cannot remove images from the whole internet, only the participating platforms listed on our partners page."
Money lost to a scam
Call your bank or payment provider first, because they may be able to stop or reverse a payment. Then:
- In the US, report it to IC3.
- In the UK, use Report Fraud, which replaced Action Fraud on 4 December 2025. It's at reportfraud.police.uk, and the phone number is still 0300 123 2040.
- In India, call the 1930 cybercrime helpline, which runs 24 hours a day, or file on cybercrime.gov.in under financial fraud.
After a bad chat
Seeing something explicit or hateful, even for two seconds, can leave you shaken. Close the tab for a while, or talk to someone you trust. None of it was your fault. Before your next chat, our post on how to stay safe on random video chat covers habits that make a repeat less likely, like framing the camera so it shows only you and leaving early when something feels off.
Questions people ask about reporting
Does the person know I reported them?
No. They see the same end-of-chat message as when someone presses Stop, and the report doesn't carry your name or any account details to them.
Can I report someone after the chat ends?
Yes, for about a minute. The Report button stays active, and on a phone a Report link shows on the end-of-chat screen. A late report on video goes in without a frame, because their video has already gone.
Does reporting someone do anything?
On OmegleLife, a report ends the chat if it's still running and stops the two of you being matched again for at least 24 hours. Moderators can ban the person on several identifiers, and reports from several different people lead to an automatic temporary ban.
Can I still report someone on Omegle?
No. Omegle closed in November 2023. Report the person on the platform where they're contacting you now, and to the police or a hotline if they're threatening you or a child is involved.
What if I reported someone by mistake?
There's no undo button, and you don't need one. One report can't trigger the automatic ban, and a moderator can dismiss it.
If you're ready to try again, video chat is one click away and the Report button is on screen for every call.
