Is Omegle Safe? Random Video Chat Risks and How to Stay Safe

Is Omegle safe? The original isn't running anymore. Omegle shut down in November 2023, about a week after settling a lawsuit from a woman it had matched, at age 11, with a man who abused her. The omegle.com address now belongs to a new company whose app hasn't opened. The sites that took its place, OmegleLife included, carry the same kinds of risk, and no site can promise you'll be safe. You can still limit what a stranger learns about you and what they could record, and most scams on these sites are easy to recognize once you've seen them.
Was Omegle safe when it was running?
It wasn't safe for children, and it let them in: until 2022, Omegle's rules allowed anyone 13 or older with a parent's permission, according to Wikipedia. Our post on what happened to Omegle has the timeline, the court case and the founder's letter.
For adults, the risks were the ones every random chat site still has. You never knew who was on the other end, and anything you showed on camera could be recorded.
Is Omegle safe now, under its new owner?
Nobody can test it yet. In October 2026 the domain shows a "launching soon" page. Its terms of use name RC Tech America Inc. as the operator and describe a livestreaming service with creators, tokens and payouts. They say a third-party age check will be required before anyone goes on camera.
The app's code also includes a message telling banned users that their account "has been temporarily banned due to community guidelines violation. You can unban by paying an unlock fee." If that feature launches, someone banned there could pay to come back. Before you use the site, find out who runs it and whether its bans stick.
What a stranger can learn about you
Your IP address, on video
Many browser video chats, ours included, run on WebRTC and connect the two devices directly so the call has less lag. That means the other person's device can see your IP address unless the site sends calls through a relay server. MDN's WebRTC documentation warns that this address "can be used to derive information about the remote device's location, network topology, and so forth."
In practice an IP address usually points to your internet provider and a rough area. It doesn't give anyone your street address, but it's one more clue to add to whatever else you let slip. On OmegleLife, text chat goes through our server, so a text partner never sees your IP. On video, a reputable VPN swaps your IP address for the VPN server's.
Links that log your IP
Text chat hides your IP until you click something. Any website you open sees your IP address, and some links are built only to record it. On OmegleLife, links from free users show up as plain text, so you'd have to copy one to open it, and you shouldn't.
Your country
OmegleLife tells each person roughly where the other is connecting from, with a line like "You're chatting with a stranger from Canada." On other sites, assume the stranger may know your country before you say a word.
Your face, your room and your voice
Your camera and microphone pick up more than you expect: mail on the desk, a school or company logo, a view from the window, family photos, the sound of someone calling your name in the next room. The safety page has a checklist. Reused usernames give away the most. If you mention your gaming tag and it matches your Instagram handle, one search links your face to your friends and your location tags.
A recording of you
Anyone can record a video chat with software on their own device, and no website can block it. In a 2023 public service announcement, the FBI said criminals were making fake explicit images and videos from ordinary content, some of it "captured during video chats," and using them for sextortion. On text, the equivalent is a screenshot.
How sextortion starts on video chat
Sextortion is blackmail: someone gets an intimate image or recording of you, then threatens to send it to people you know unless you pay or send more. The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center received more than 16,000 sextortion complaints in the first seven months of 2021, with losses above $8 million, according to its warning that year.
The pattern it describes fits random chat too:
- The first contact feels friendly and mutual.
- The other person asks to move to another app, away from the site's moderation and Report button.
- They push you to undress or do something sexual on camera, or to send photos.
- Then the demand comes: pay, or the material gets posted on social media.
If it happens, stop replying and don't pay. Paying doesn't guarantee they'll delete anything, and they may ask for more. Save screenshots of the threats and the account names, report the person on every platform involved, and contact the police. In the US you can file a complaint at ic3.gov. The safety page has the full list of steps.
If you're an adult and you have a copy of the image or video, StopNCII.org can make a digital fingerprint, called a hash, on your own device. Participating platforms then block uploads that match it. The image itself never leaves your phone or computer. It can't remove anything from the whole internet, only from partner sites. If you were under 18 in the images, StopNCII points you to NCMEC's Take It Down service instead.
Bots and scams on random chat
Most scams on these sites follow a few scripts, and you can usually spot them in the first minute.
- A bot in text chat replies within a second, ignores what you said and sends a link within a message or two.
- A fake "camera" is often a looped video. If the person never reacts to what you say or do, skip.
- "Verify you're real" or "see my pics" links lead to phishing pages, malware or paid sign-ups.
- Any request for money is a scam, whatever the story. The FTC's advice on gift cards is blunt: "Only scammers will tell you to buy a gift card," and it adds that no real business or agency will ask you to.
- A request to move to another app is a warning sign on its own, because OmegleLife can't see or stop what happens there.
How to leave a chat and report someone
You don't owe a stranger a goodbye. On OmegleLife, press Stop or Esc. The button asks "Really?" so you don't skip a good chat by accident, and a second press ends it. New finds the next person.
If the person broke the community guidelines, report them instead of only skipping. The Report button ends the chat for both of you, and the other person doesn't learn who reported them. A moderator sees the last 50 messages and, on video, one frame, and you won't be matched with that person again for at least 24 hours. Our post on how to report someone on video chat explains which reason to pick.
If a chat ever involves someone under 18 in a sexual situation, report it with the "Minor (under 18)" reason and don't screenshot or save the material.
Short answers on Omegle safety
Can people see your IP on Omegle-style video chat?
Usually, yes. Video on many of these sites runs peer to peer, so the other device can see your IP address unless the site relays calls through its own server. It points to your provider and a rough area. Text chat on OmegleLife goes through our server and doesn't expose it.
Can someone record you on random video chat?
Yes. Screen recording happens on the other person's device, and no site can detect or block it. Keep anything you wouldn't want saved off camera.
Is Omegle safe for kids or teens?
No, and neither is any random chat site. Omegle let in 13-year-olds with a parent's permission until 2022. OmegleLife is for adults only, and we ban anyone we believe is under 18.
Is text chat safer than video chat?
Text shows a stranger much less: no face, no room and, on OmegleLife, no IP address. You'll meet more bots there, though. Our comparison of text chat vs video chat goes through the trade-offs.
If you'd like to try random chat with these habits in place, video chat on OmegleLife is free and needs no account.
